Hello and welcome!
Poetry is a powerful thing. It brings people together and shows that we are far more connected to each other than we might realize.
As a poet, I strive to show those human connections and sometimes the sadness and loss we feel when important, or even everyday, connections fail.
As a teacher, I enjoy empowering students to express their ideas in ways others will understand. I especially love sharing poetry with children, particularly those who may not feel very confident about their writing abilities, and showing them that they can be excellent poets.
When shared with an open heart, poetry can transform us.
Biography
Virginia Crawford grew up in Baltimore City, graduated from Emerson College in Boston, and received her M.Litt. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She has taught poetry workshops through the Maryland State Arts Council's Arts in Education program for over a decade, in addition to teaching writing at the college level. She has read her work widely throughout the Mid-Atlantic region at venues like the Baltimore Book Festival and the Chincoteague Writers' Conference.
Publications
Touch, her first collection of poems, appeared from Finishing Line Press, March 2011. Her poems have appeared in The Mas Tequila Review, Gargoyle, Baltimore Review, Maryland Poetry Review, Black Moon, the Baltimore City Paper and many others. Her work has been anthologized in Thy Mother's Glass, September Eleven Maryland Voices, and Weavings 2000 (edited by former MD Poet Laureate Michael Glaser). She coedited the anthology, Poetry Baltimore: Poems about a City with her husband Sam Schmidt, and Voices Fly with fellow poet Laura Shovan. It will appear in spring 2012 from CityLit Press.
